97,500 affected people already benefited
New Delhi/ Chennai/ Bangalore :December 8, 2015: Smile Foundation, a national level development organisation, is providing relief aids and rescuing the flood affected, stranded people in Chennai. The Disaster Response team of Smile Foundation is actively aiding the rescue and immediate relief efforts in the city and has reached 97,500 people already. In the phase I operation, so far Smile Foundation Disaster Response team has been able to distribute over 6880 kgs of dry food and 1,20,000 litres of water supplied by PepsiCo. In the next seven days, dry food packets, bottled water, survival kits and other urgent supplies will be provided to more affected families. The areas being covered currently are Pallavaram, Annaputtur, Naagai keni, Karima Nagar and Mudichur in Kanchipuram district; Ponneri, Ennor, Seethanambakkam and Minjur in Thiruvallur district and Villivakkam and Balaramapuram and Leprosy Colony in Thiruvananthapuram district.
The disaster response team of Smile Foundation is busy with procurement and distribution of relief material in Chennai. As per the need assessment done by the team on ground, water contamination was identified as a major issue, and a possible outbreak of water-borne diseases was detected. Hence our first priority was to mobilize safe drinking water in large quantity, along with dry and packaged food. Further need assessment is being carried out to devise short term and long term plans for rehabilitation and revival of the affected children and families in identified flood affected areas.

• So far, 1, 20,000 liters of water (Aquafina), 6880 kgs of Oats/ dry foods have been distributed
• A total of 12 distribution points (hubs) has been created. Each distribution point caters to 6-8 sub locations
• Each hubs are being manned by set of 20 relief workers
