Smile Foundation in collaboration with Karma Republic hosted a mela for celebrating Diwali for the children at one its centres in Chandigarh. Karma Republic is a social enterprise which uses T-shirts and supporting merchandise as a medium to bring to the surface the inherent thought process of the youth of this nation.
There were around 350 children in this Diwali mela. All these children are orphaned and deprived. This centre is a home for them where they are provided food, clothing, shelter, education and job oriented vocational training. All the children were divided into groups for various games. They also participated with great enthusiasm in the other events like music, dance, art, craft, and newspaper costume making. Al the events brought out the creativity in the all the children.
Speaking at the occasion, Preet Arjun Singh, the founder of Karma Republic, said “I wanted to change the way the youth ignored the social problems existing in our society. I wanted to instill the feeling of ownership in the people around me, for the deeds that they commit in their day to day life. I wanted people to take the responsibility of not only initiating social change but living up as examples of change for others around them.”
The event besides seeing active participation from small children also saw the participation of a large number of young people who came forward to participate in an initiative to help the underprivileged and spread a few smiles.
