The year dawned with a promise of change as progressive campaigns like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao were initiated by the Govt. of India. Smile Foundation has always believed that when women and girl children are supported and empowered, the whole society benefits. In all our programmes, be it education, health or livelihood, we keep women and the girl child at the centre.

With India looking towards advanced industrial growth in the near future, the Cover Story highlights the importance of including women as equal contributors and beneficiaries of the resulting economic development in the country. Lack of opportunities and gender disparities in all spheres of life, often become hindrances for our young women to join the workforce. Through its STeP programme, Smile Foundation has been training lesser privileged women in market-oriented skills and making them employed in the rapidly expanding service and retail sectors.

Following a life-cycle approach, Smile Foundation has been working for the welfare of children and their families through its intensive programmes on ground. While education is at the core of child welfare, nutrition and health too are important aspects to ensure the holistic development of children. In Focus draws attention to the critical situation of malnutrition and under-nutrition among children, and Smile Foundation’s nationwide campaign to spread awareness on the importance of nutrition and hygiene among parents and communities.

It has been an exciting time for us, with expansion and enhancement of ground projects, topped with recognition from some of the best industry bodies. All four of our major programmes – Mission Education, Smile on Wheels, Swabhiman and STeP, were awarded for the impact they have been able to create.
