This region, rich in tradition and culture, is home to young talents like Rupali Paraja, a spirited 7th-grade student of Seperipanga village who is breaking barriers to receive an education, thanks to the Mission Education (ME) center of Smile Foundation (Watch Rupali’s video here).
Rupali’s day begins with the first rays of the sun, as she helps her mother with important household chores and caring for her younger siblings, feeding them food, changing their clothes, and teaching them her own learnings. The responsibilities she shoulders at such a tender age are a testament to her resilience and strength. But what’s amazing is her strong desire to go to school and get an education.
The indigenous children of Kandhamal, like Rupali, have to overcome many problems to go to school. These problems are connected to the way people live in their communities. Here are some of the challenges they face:
1. Geographical Isolation: Kandhamal has hills and faraway villages that make it tough to get to school. Many kids live far from school, so they can’t go to school easily.
2. Language Barriers: Indigenous communities often have their distinct languages and dialects, which can create a linguistic divide between the students and the mainstream education system. This disconnect can make it challenging for children to understand and engage with the curriculum.
3. Economic Constraints: Many families in these communities struggle to make ends meet. The cost of education, including uniforms, books, and transportation, is often beyond their means, leading to a high dropout rate among students.
