In the pursuit of gender equity, involving men in the process of women empowerment is a crucial step forward. While women empowerment has made significant strides, true progress requires collaboration and understanding between both genders. In fact, engaging men in the journey towards women empowerment can help achieve lasting gender equity.
Women empowerment has been a focal point in societal discourse, advocating for equal opportunities and rights. However, the path to gender equity is not a one-sided effort. To create a truly inclusive society, it is essential to involve men in the process. Men, as allies, can play a pivotal role in breaking down traditional barriers and fostering an environment where both genders thrive.
Shifting Perspectives
Empowering women does not diminish the significance of men; instead, it promotes a more balanced and harmonious society. Shifting perspectives on gender roles and stereotypes is key to fostering an environment where everyone can reach their full potential. Men, as influencers in various spheres, have the power to challenge preconceived notions and contribute to a more equitable world.
A critical aspect of involving men in the journey of women empowerment is education. Men must be informed about the benefits of empowering women, not just for women themselves but for society as a whole. Equality in the workplace, enhanced creativity, and economic growth are just a few of the positive outcomes associated with gender equity.
Promoting Inclusive Leadership:
Leadership positions have traditionally been dominated by men. To drive women empowerment and gender equity, it is essential to promote inclusive leadership. Men can actively advocate for and support women in leadership roles, breaking the glass ceiling and inspiring future generations.
Encouraging Equal Opportunities in the Workplace:
Creating a workplace that offers equal opportunities to both genders is crucial for women empowerment. Men can actively contribute by advocating for fair hiring practices, equal pay, and addressing workplace discrimination. A collaborative effort in dismantling systemic barriers will lead to a more inclusive and supportive work environment.
Fostering Empathetic Communication:
Communication plays a vital role in dismantling stereotypes and fostering understanding between genders. Men can contribute by engaging in empathetic communication, actively listening to women’s perspectives, and promoting dialogue on issues related to women empowerment. Open and honest conversations contribute to breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive society.
Supporting Work-Life Balance:
Another significant aspect of women empowerment is supporting work-life balance. Men can actively contribute by sharing domestic responsibilities and supporting policies that promote family-friendly workplaces. By encouraging a more balanced distribution of responsibilities, men contribute to creating an environment where women can pursue their professional goals without facing societal pressures.
Smile Foundation’s Women Empowerment Programme
Smile Foundation’s Swabhiman programme truly justifies its name, which means self-respect in English, with the aim of empowering women and adolescent girls from lower socio-economic strata and enabling them to realise their potential in every sphere of life – be it home, workplace or community. Read more about the programme here.
Swabhiman is designed to bring attitudinal and behavioural changes in the community men through activities like regular household visits, spouse counselling and informal meetings with male family members. Under Swabhiman, men in the marginalised communities are made aware of the underlying importance of responsible fatherhood; increased male involvement in family planning; providing critical care support to spouse during pregnancy.
Male Volunteer Amul’s Story
Take the case of Amul from an urban village near Gurugram, Haryana. When his wife Pramila first joined Smile Foundation’s entrepreneurship programme for women, he was sceptic about these sessions. He thought Pramila was just wasting her time. But gradually he started to notice that Pramila was gaining knowledge of many practical skills, and becoming more aware and confident. Noticing Pramila’s diligence, the Swabhiman team helped her set-up a clothing boutique. They also financed the tailoring machines and other essentials for the shop.
That was when Amul realised that the world of Swabhiman is able to create real change. This motivated him to get involved in the initiative. Today, he is volunteering as a community change agent with the programme and helping others realise the importance of women empowerment and financial independence. He conducts door to door visits regularly, counselling men and adolescent boys to help create a gender equal society.
True gender equity requires a collective effort from both genders. Men can play a vital role in breaking down barriers and fostering a more equitable society. Together, we can create a future where women empowerment is not just a goal but a reality for all.
