Many civil society organisations in the Global South depend on foreign funding to do their work. This makes them vulnerable and puts them at risk of working donor-driven. Change the Game India (CtGI), the capacity development programme of Smile Foundation, along with Change the Game Academy (CtGA), aims to end this dependency by supporting autonomous local organisations to strengthen their fundraising capacity.
Raising domestic resources not only enhances financial sustainability, but it also increases community engagement, local ownership and legitimacy of organisations. Additionally, CtGI also trains organisations to mobilise support from like-minded organizations including governments.
To ensure sustainability, CtGI is offering training on two main themes namely; Local Fundraising (LFR) and Mobilizing Support (MS). Change the Game India offers e-learning, in-person classroom courses and individual coaching, by building their capacities, capabilities, resilience and future readiness, through Smile’s s civic driven approach model.
Capacity Development & Mentoring
CtGI believes in capacity development & mentoring of these grassroots organisations to achieve self-reliance and self-sustainability. This in turn enabling them to address the needs of the civil society. These are achieved by supplementing and complementing the efforts of the government and in line with global development strategies for gaining credibility and support locally.
Impact
Smile Foundation has built capacities of 338 participants from 201 organisations from 18 states and 2 Union Territories during 2016 -2022. Through international trainings Smile Foundation has trained 171 participants from 99 organisations located in 20 countries from across 4 continents. This is done under 9 International Training Programs on LFR and MS conducted till 31 December 2022.
Method
CtGI involves leaders to understand the training trajectory, its importance and relevance. Then the leaders shortlist the suitable candidates from their organizations to take part in the training trajectory which includes a six-months coaching/mentoring phase after training.
