Working for the educational needs of children in Port City

Working for the educational needs of children in Port City

This Mission Education project aims to fulfill the educational needs of disadvantaged children in the urban and rural areas of Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh. The main aim of this project is to bring runaways, orphans, child labourers and children from extremely poor families in the fold of education.

Visakhapatnam, being a prominent trade centre, attracts a large migrant population from surrounding areas and other parts of the country coming to work in its factories. A significant proportion of this migrant population comprises of daily wage labourers, living on a bare minimum. The children at the centre come from these families.

Parents-teacher meetings are conducted regularly every month wherein feedbacks are given regarding the child’s progress, strengths, weaknesses and talents. These meetings encourage the parents, mostly daily wage labourers who have never been to school, to become involved with their children’s education.

Along with education, the centre focuses on the hygiene and health conditions of these kids, as most of them live in dilapidated tenements in overcrowded slums. Committed volunteers are the real backbone behind this project’s success.

Smile Foundation has joined hands with Lepakshhi Educational Society for this project.

Bringing the marginalized in the fold of education

Bringing the marginalized in the fold of education

The primary beneficiary group of this Mission Education project located at Gurgaon in Haryana is children who are deprived of formal education and a protective environment at home which discourages their learning.

Many of them are first generation learners with their parents being mostly migrants who have come to this commercial centre in hope of better livelihood opportunities. These people prefer to choose unskilled wagery above education, for their children. The centre holds door to door meetings and group counseling sessions with the parents, to induct the children into the programme and holds regular parents teacher meetings, so that the parents remain actively involved in the progress of their children.

The centre, which has grown in capacity from eight to a 100 odd children today, has successfully mainstreamed many children in leading schools of Delhi and NCR like Amity International and Delhi Public School.

The centre also provides remedial education to the mainstreamed kids, to help them cope up with the formal educational setup. Nutrition is provided to all the children, along with regular health check-ups and training in various co-curricular activities.

Skill-based learning for slum children in South West Delhi

Skill-based learning for slum children in South West Delhi

This Mission Education project imparts quality education and life skills to underserved children from slums in and around South West Delhi, with special focus on girl children. Along with academics, emphasis is also laid on skill-based learning for the children.

The residential colonies in South West Delhi employ more than 10,000 domestic helpers, maids and drivers, who are immigrant workers living in the slums of Kishangarh, Bhawani Kunj, Shanti Kunj, Andheria Mod, Rangpuri Pahadi and Chhattarpur. As these people do not have residential proofs or birth certificates of their children, they face difficulty in sending their children to conventional schools. The centre aims at bridging this gap by providing education to these underprivileged children and mainstreaming them into the formal education system.

Activities and excursions are an integral part of the learning process at the centre. Events like Diwali Fete, Book Fair, picnics, dance, drama and poem recitation are organised to foster the all round development of the children. Health check-ups and counselling of parents and children on hygiene issues are done on a regular basis.

Smile Foundation has partnered with Nai Disha Educational and Cultural Society for this project.
