SPREADING SMILE THROUGH BETTER HEALTH- KALAHANDI

SPREADING SMILE THROUGH BETTER HEALTH- KALAHANDI

Kalahandi, (locally pronounced Kalahani) is a district of Orissa in India. In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Kalahandi one of the country’s most backward districts (out of a total of 650). It is one of the 19 districts in Orissa currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGFP). No public sector industrial investment has taken place in Kalahandi since the past 62 years. The local needs in major infrastructure in railway, highways and demand for a railway factory and Central University have not been addressed yet. In 2008, an “India Today” survey put Kalahandi among the bottom five Lok Sabha Constituency in Socio-economic and infrastructure development in India.

Kalhandi faces the problem of acute poverty, most of the people here are farmers, small land holders or daily wage workers unable to access to the basic healthcare services and are also ignorant to their health needs. Kalahandi has had a history of frequent droughts, often leading to severe food and health crisis. This area suffers with marked deficiency of professional and trained doctors at the PHCs and CHCs, thus making quality healthcare out of bounds for the socio-economically marginalized population of the area. Regular medical checkups and Pathological tests are conducted by Smile like that of Haemoglobin, Dengue, and Malaria etc. For the more efficient working the SoW has been divided into number of departments working efficiently on different specialities like Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Dermatology and others. Other than this, IEC activities with the support of local bodies are conducted in small groups for women, adolescents etc., individual sessions and family meetings on health education are also done. SoW is also taking care of the ANC and PNC requirement of pregnant women. With gradual increase in the number of volunteers and community support the situation in Kalhandi is changing for the better. People are very happy with the work and see Smile Foundation as a new hope for the better world. Therefore, Smile Foundation is initiating its healthcare programmes in this area to promote awareness among people on the basic hygiene methods, further taking care of their healthcare needs.

Intervention

Smile Foundation has come as a ray of hope for the ignored and destitute population by launching its Smile on Wheels Programme at Bhawani Patna in Thuamul Rampur Block of Kalahandi district of Orrisa on 1st June 2015. It has partnered with Orissa Voluntary Health Association (OVHA) for the project, which is being supported by TATA Trusts. The project will complement the existing government facilities, form linkages with community health workers and help make quality healthcare accessible to the villagers.

The mobile healthcare unit has been provided with a team of qualified and experienced doctor, nurse, community mobilizers and project coordinators, along with diagnostic and pathological kits, medicines, counselling and referral facilities.

Project Highlights

  • Pathological tests were conducted ranging from diabetes, haemoglobin and others for accurate diagnosis of the diseases and better treatment of the patient.

  • Working as the bridge between the government and underprivileged population, Smile Foundation is referring patients for advanced treatment to the government and private hospitals.

  • SoW has initiated various awareness programmes performing street plays, talks for better understanding of the population etc.

  • People from 42 of the remotest of villages in Kalahandi district in Orissa now have healthcare coming right at their doorsteps.

Bangalore gets benefits of Smile on Wheels

Bangalore gets benefits of Smile on Wheels

Bangalore is called the Silicon Valley of India because of its advancements in the software industry. But not all parts of Bangalore are as advanced, there are places where people do not have a proper place to live in and two square meals to eat. The health conditions of the people in this place are not good and also they do not live in hygienic conditions. There is no proper health care unit in the areas that people can avail. Women suffer from anemia and children suffer from malnutrition.

Intervention

In order to take care of the health care needs of the people living in poor conditions in the slums and other areas Smile Foundation has launched a Smile on Wheels project in Bangalore in collaboration with Karuna Trust. The project was launched on the 17th of October 2012 to work mainly for the people of Yemalur and Doddakenhalli villages in Krishnarajapuram district. The salient features of this project are to make quality health facilities available to the people and promote a health seeking behavior among the people.

The condition of women is also not good in these areas because the people are not literate and do not have any knowledge about the harms of early or repeated pregnancies due to which most of the women in these places suffer from anemia. The awareness sessions conducted by Smile on Wheels have greatly benefitted the population, more so in the case of women who can now avail healthcare facilities and also take proper care of their children who were earlier suffering from malnutrition.

Project Highlights

  • To provide curative services for common communicable diseases, injuries and accidents.

  • Patients are also being treated for common chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, chronic bronchitis, asthma, arthritis etc.

  • Antenatal and postnatal care is provided to the mothers as well as immunization vaccinations to the small children. Emergency cases are referred to the headquarter PHC or the nearest PHC. Alternately, 108 is immediately contacted for the transfer of patients.

  • First Aid services and counseling on matters like HIV/AIDS is also provided to the people.

  • Immediate lab tests are also conducted so that diseases can be diagnosed at the earliest.

Smile on Wheels project launched in Delhi with special reference to women and children

Smile on Wheels project launched in Delhi with special reference to women and children

Health care is an important aspect of daily life. And it has also been one of the most neglected areas in the lives of most people. The economically weaker section in the society has fewer privileges in terms of basic needs such as food and habitat and seeks health care only when the situation goes beyond control. The urban poor are the worst sufferers in these situations because health care in the urban areas is much more costly than in other areas. Mothers and their children are the most vulnerable in such situations. Delhi in these terms is one of the most affected areas as there are innumerable slums and areas filled with such urban poor population.

Intervention

To address these health issues along with special reference to mother and child healthcare needs Smile Foundation with the support of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) launched a Smile on Wheels project. Some of the main features of this programme are to make the community aware and develop health seeking behavior in them. The main focus of this programme apart from mother and children will be on public transport drivers living in the urban areas of Delhi. The awareness sessions conducted by the Smile on Wheels on health of women and taking care of infants and small children have greatly benefitted the population and the door step medical help provided to the people in the slums have decreased their health woes up to much extents.

Project Highlights

  • Improving coverage of antenatal care amongst pregnant women to ensure safe motherhood and decreased maternal mortality.

  • Generating awareness on issues of reproductive and sexual health covering safe motherhood, child health, family planning, RTI/STI/HIV-AIDS among adolescent girls.

  • To provide primary health services to people residing in the identified villages/slums at their doorsteps through mobile health clinic.

  • To sensitize the community towards better health seeking behavior to demand and avail better quality healthcare services with the help of Behavioural Change Communication in the form of Information Education Communication material.

  • To develop linkages with nearby government/private health institutions/clinics to provide health care referral services to the targeted population.

Bangalore- Smile on Wheels reaches to the masses

Bangalore- Smile on Wheels reaches to the masses

Bangalore being one of the busiest cities in India has a population which is always on the run and one of the most advanced in terms of lifestyle and technology. But the city also has a population which is deprived of the basic needs. They work as daily wage labourers and can hardly avail any facilities and due to such situations availing healthcare has always been a major issue among the population. Women and children are the most affected groups in such areas.

Intervention

Smile Foundation partnered with BAE Systems to initiate a Smile on Wheels project in the northern and eastern part of rural Bangalore. Launched in January 2014 it reaches to 25 operational locations including villages and urban slums across Bengaluru.

Forced to be engaged in household activities and suffering from the oppression of gender based caste system women hardly move out of the house, let alone avail healthcare services. The project aims to sensitize the population mainly the male population about the adverse effect of their actions on the health of the women and their children. After the start of the project relatively more women have come forward to avail health care services.

The tireless efforts of the Smile on Wheels team have continued to avail good results ever since its initiation.

Project Highlights

  • A range of preventive, curative and promotive services are offered as a part of planned interventions under this project. Curative services include OPDs while preventive and promotive entail Health Awareness Programmes.

Providing door step medical help to the slums in Gurugram

Providing door step medical help to the slums in Gurugram

With close affinity to the national capital, Gurugram (Haryana) has witnessed rapid urbanization and is now a financial and industrial hub with the third highest per capita income in India. But the condition is very different for the less privileged strata of the society which lies neglected in the absence of even basic amenities.

TWhen it comes to health, the major portion of this segment – wage labourers working in the unorganised sector, have neither means nor awareness to avail of the mainline medical facilities which throng the city.

Lack of proper sanitation, safe water supply, proper sewage and waste disposal facilities with most of the people defecating in open have been increasingly creating conditions where infectious diseases like dengue, malaria, chickengunia thrive, leading to an uninhabitable atmosphere.

Intervention

To address the urgent healthcare needs of the neglected populace in Gurugram, Smile Foundation launched Smile on Wheels mobile hospital programme, with the support of SBI-Card.

The project will provide doorstep preventive, curative and promotive healthcare facilities in 12 slum communities spread throughout the city. Various disease patterns have been detected in the population ranging from diarrhoea, arthritis and skin infections to more serious ailments. Other than this, special awareness sessions will also be held from time to time on important health related issues for the people. Community mobilizers and volunteers make regular home visits and conduct follow ups of the treatment given. ANC and PNC are essential priorities of the project centred on making mothers and children healthier.

Project Highlights

  • The project will cover 12 neglected slum locations including Wazirabad I, Dhani, Wazirabad II, Dhani, Tulip White, Jharsa, Dharam Colony, Kanai Gaon, R D City, Chandan nagar II, Nathupur Gaon, Sarol gaon, Chackarpur and Kadipur.

  • Door Step health facilities will provide treatment for seasonal diseases, antenatal care, post natal care, communicable diseases and other primary health issues.

  • There will be availability of 40 different types of medicines which will include antibiotic, antihistaminic etc. are ensured. Few of the medicines available are Amoxicillin, Cipraflox, Doxicytline.

Bengaluru gets the benefits of Smile on Wheels

Bengaluru gets the benefits of Smile on Wheels

Bangalore/Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka has a population of about 8.42 million and a metropolitan population of about 8.52 million making it the third most populous city and the fifth most populous urban agglomeration in India. Bangalore had 9% people residing in the slums according to 2011 survey population of India.

The City is progressing greatly in corporate and economic sectors and the urban population may be advancing in all healthcare and lifestyle facilities but it is not the same for the poor people living in slums, resettlements and in the far flung areas who remain caught in the webs of unchecked rising population, degrading health conditions, neglected education sector and unemployment. There are apparently 387 private hospitals in Bangalore with a few hundred Govt ones which is hardly a sufficient number and poor people hardly have access to these due to low incomes, no awareness and inadequate transport facilities.

Intervention

Taking this matter into account, Smile foundation has come up with the “2nd Smile on wheels” mission supported by Ericsson Global services to help support the underprivileged by providing them with basic healthcare facilities at their doorsteps through mobile hospitals.

The poor people depending on daily wages and being mostly construction workers or labourers cannot afford to lose a day of work wages so they never prioritise going to hospitals even if they are sick. This is the main reason why SoW goes to them, to the places, where they dwell. And it was decided to make these people aware of health, hygiene, and sanitation and make them sensitive towards these issues. The missions of SoW includes informing people, educating them of basic requirements for healthy livelihood and making them well educated, sensitive and well aware so that they carry the practice forward and also educate others on their way up.

This mission SoW also includes awareness programmes, pathological lab tests, OPDs and workshops. The Prevalent diseases addressed included Pain, COPD, Multiple boil/Skin infections, Fever, Anaemia etc.

Other issues addressed included Health and Hygiene, ANC PNC care, Medicine, Immunization, Family Planning etc.

The Slums in which these mobile hospitals operated were Andrapur slum, Narayannappa slum, TC Palya, Krishna Murthy Nagar, Hosanagar, Munekollala huts etc.

Project Highlights

  • Slums reached included Andrapur slum, Narayannappa slum, TC Palya, Krishna Murthy Nagar, Hosanagar, Munekollala huts etc.

  • Diseases addressed included Pain, COPD, Multiple boil/Skin infections, Fever, Anaemia etc.

  • Patients needing extra or continuous medical care and extended facilities were shifted or referred to other nearest hospitals and medical centres.

  • Lab tests were done for diseases like pain, COPD, weakness, anaemia, eye/ear infection, fever/URI, diarrhoea, gastritis/nausea/vomiting, constipation, scabies and malaria.

  • Awareness Sessions on prevention and cure and also IECs including some innovative ideas, games etc to make people interested and aware about the programme were also held.

NOIDA – Serving the underprivileged migrant populace in urban villages

NOIDA – Serving the underprivileged migrant populace in urban villages

Noida, the aspiring IT capital of India, is ranked the best city in Uttar Pradesh. However this is only one side of the story. There has been a steady inflow of migrants in the city from different places in UP and also from other states. Labourers and daily wagers form a major portion of this migrant population and have long been facing the grim consequences of poor sanitation, illiteracy and irregular wages.

Healthcare remains one of the most neglected areas for these families as they struggle for daily survival. Although the city contains many private healthcare facilities, it lags behind in government healthcare infrastructure with the fatal consequences being faced by the city’s urban poor populace. The inadequate health provisions have led to alarming cases of chickengunia, tuberculosis, malaria, dengue, etc. in certain areas.

Intervention

Smile Foundation in collaboration with Ericsson India Global Services Pvt. Ltd. initiated the Smile on Wheels mobile hospital programme in Noida from 10th September 2015 in 15 identified villages and slums of the city to ensure better healthcare facilities for the disadvantaged migrant population.

Apart from taking preventive and curative healthcare to the doorsteps of people through regular OPDs, pathological test facilities and distribution of free of cost medicine, the project spreads awareness in the community through innovative methods like school programmes on personal hygiene and nutrition. Street plays, songs and interesting audio visuals are used to inform the people in an engaging and interesting way.

The main focus of the programme is on women and children who are most prone to health problems, communicable diseases and infections. The project has received unprecedented support from the community and has witnessed marked increase in the number of volunteers from the community in a very short span of time.

Project Highlights

  • The project targets an annual population of 16,000, covering 15 villages and slums in Noida including Hasanpur Bhaupur, Kanawani, Chhejarsi, Khoda Colony, Bhangel and Kalyanpuri

  • The maximum direct beneficiaries have been women and children, comprising 59.3% of the benefitted population.

  • Pathological test facilities for haemoglobin, chickengunea, malaria and dengue, along with ECG and MRI facilities have been provided

  • Critical patients are referred to nearby public and private health institutions as per their specific requirements and liaisons are made with community health workers

  • Innovative awareness programmes have been initiated, targeting the school children to promote the sense of basic hygiene among them

Kolkata – Serving the destitute urban population

Kolkata – Serving the destitute urban population

Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, is the principal commercial, cultural, and educational centre of East India. As a growing metropolitan in a developing country, Kolkata confronts rapid unplanned urbanisation, traffic congestion, poverty, overpopulation, and other logistic and socioeconomic problems; being the third-most populous city in India.

According to one estimate, almost a quarter of the population in Kolkata live on less than 27 rupees. Further, there are unauthorised slums which are even devoid of basic municipality services occupied by squatters who have been living along canals, railway lines and on roads.

Living conditions in these slums are so appalling that drinking water, drainage, sanitation and electricity are almost non-existent. Under such conditions, the health status of the people inhabiting Kolkata’s slums has been severely deteriorating. The city also has a low fertility rate and a sharp gender population inequality.

Intervention

Smile Foundation, aiming to address the problems of the destitute urban population of the city living in unhygienic slum conditions, launched its Smile on Wheels programme in Kolkata on 6th October 2015, with the support of Ericsson India Global Services Pvt. Ltd.

The mobile hospital programme is providing services to 20 slum localities including Patharghata, Kashinathpur, MurariPukur Judge Bagan, Bonomalipur, Goabagan, and Sardarpara.

With the existing gender inequalities negatively impacting the health of women and children, and most of the women being wage labourers or domestic workers ignorant to their necessary healthcare needs, SoW is paying special focus to maternal health aspects such as antenatal and prenatal check-ups and reproductive care.

Apart from regular medical checkups, various pathological tests like Haemoglobin, Dengue, and Malaria etc. are conducted when needed. In addition to this, awareness activities are conducted in small groups for women, adolescents etc., along with individual sessions and family meetings on health, hygiene and family planning.

The SoW project team is working efficiently with a good number of volunteers for more effective results. The community people are appreciative of the project and actively participate in all activities.

Project Highlights

  • The project covers 15 slums in Kolkata, reaching out to a population of 16,000 annually.

  • More than 42 disease patterns including diabetes, hypothyroidism, dyspepsia, malnutrition etc. have been identified and treated.

  • Pathological tests are conducted regularly ranging from diabetes, haemoglobin and others for accurate diagnosis of the diseases and better treatment of the patients.

  • A referral system is in place to facilitate further specialized treatment for patients at the nearest government and private hospitals.

  • SoW has initiated various engaging awareness programmes including street plays and health talks for better understanding of the community.
