Anaemia is a critical health issue affecting underserved communities with limited healthcare access. To address this challenge, Smile Foundation’s Swabhiman programme, in partnership with PepsiCo, has implemented Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). These units deliver essential healthcare directly to women and children, focusing on early anaemia detection, immediate intervention, and raising awareness about balanced diets. By promoting the use of locally available fruits and vegetables, the initiative encourages healthier, affordable meal choices. The programme not only provides health check-ups but also educates women on improving nutritional intake through cost-effective cooking methods. This approach aims to foster proactive health habits and support long-term improvements in community health.
Complementing this effort is the Nutrition Enhancement Programme (NEP), a successful three-year collaboration between PepsiCo Foundation, Smile Foundation, and the Sangrur District Administration. Aligned with the Poshan Abhiyaan, NEP has significantly impacted 60,000 people in Sangrur, Punjab, by improving maternal and child nutrition across 23 villages. The programme directly benefited over 16,000 individuals, including pregnant women, lactating mothers, and young children, and indirectly reached an additional 45,000 people. Key components of NEP included extensive community engagement, 260 health camps offering nutritional assessments and health check-ups, and capacity building for Anganwadi workers and teachers.
Through community kitchen gardens and tailored dietary recommendations, NEP made nutritious food more accessible and appealing. The initiative’s comprehensive approach and strong community involvement have enhanced health and nutritional status in the region, laying a solid foundation for continued progress.
Together, these initiatives highlight the commitment of PepsiCo and Smile Foundation to combat anaemia and improve nutrition, fostering healthier communities through innovative, on-the-ground solutions.
Nutrition Enhancement Programme, a collaboration between Smile Foundation and PepsiCo Foundation, aims to introduce, equip, and empower pregnant women, lactating mothers, and mothers of children up to 6 years old with accurate information regarding their health, hygiene, safe institutional deliveries, and nutrition. As part of the programme, 20 anganwadi centers in 13 villages of Bhawanigarh block, Sangrur, were renovated and supplemented with regular reinforcement activities.
Through consistent efforts, the programme has gained recognition and appreciation from the District Commissioner of Sangrur. The launch of the programme was a significant achievement, attended by esteemed dignitaries from the District Administration, PepsiCo Foundation, and Smile Foundation. This recognition reflects the positive impact and effectiveness of the programme in the community.
