More than 20,000 villagers get free healthcare at Smile Mega Health Camp

More than 100 doctors, 1000 paramedic staff and over 1000 volunteers joined Smile Foundation in providing free healthcare to over 20,000 women, children and senior citizens through the Annual Mega Health Camp in Bhilwara, Rajasthan. The 10-day long camp, organised in association with Sadbhavana Seva Trust and Jain Conference, offered critical health services such as surgery, ophthalmology, gynaecology, dentistry, orthopaedics, medicine, radiology, paediatrics and pathology.

Teachers Training and Capacity Building Workshop

Teacher’s Training and Capacity Building Workshop was organized for communitybased organizations from across India by Smile Foundation. A step further in ensuring quality education and accessible learning for children from marginalized sections of the society under Mission Education, the workshop was aimed at enabling all round development of children, and different methodologies for teaching children in the primary and middle classes.

Village level health awareness meetings were organized in Tapukera, Pathredi, Kehrani, Harchandpur, Santalka, Nimbaheri, Jhiwana and Gwalda under Smile Foundation's Smile on Wheels mobile hospital project in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. Awareness was spread on personal hygiene and sanitation, how to care for newborn babies, and prevention of communicable diseases. The villagers learned a lot about easy methods to avoid critical health issues that can eventually become fatal.

Exposure visit conducted for Swabhiman Scholars in Delhi

Meritorious girls from the slums of Delhi who have received scholarships for completing their studies under Smile Foundation's Swabhiman programme went for a day-out to visit the National Science Centre. The girls explored various sections within the science centre, including Human Biology gallery, Fun Science Library, Heritage and Dinosaur gallery, Nuclear Science gallery, and the Revolution gallery. The girls were thrilled and enthusiastic to learn many new things.

Career Counselling sessions for STeP trainees across India

Youth getting trained under Smile Foundation's livelihood training programme STeP in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad were given career counselling by experts from various organisations. The sessions were focused on subjects such as development of confidence, facing interviews, decision making and taking up jobs in their field of interest. The sessions helped in motivating the students to go forth with different career choices.

Empowering Women through Reproductive Health Education & Services

A project titled “Empowering Women and Adolescent Girls through Reproductive Health Education and Services” was launched in Surat Nagar, Gurugram under Smile Foundation's women empowerment programme Swabhiman. The project aims at empowering women and girls by generating awareness and providing access to quality reproductive health care including antenal and postnatal care. The project has directly benefitted over 16,000 women and girls so far.

Celebrations, Awareness Session, and more with Delhi Police

On National Girl Child Day, children, teachers, and women officers of Delhi Police came together to celebrate and spread awareness among the attendees about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society. A self defence training was conducted by Ms. Kiran Sethi – ASI, Delhi Police that was well responded to by over 200 girls. Discussions were initiated on important topics such as safety, protection, honour, child marriage, and inequality in education.

A sensitisation session on menstrual hygiene was conducted in Hasthinapuram Govt. Higher Sec. School, Chennai, under Smile Foundation's Smile on Wheels mobile hospital project in the region. More than 200 girls from the school participated in the session. The medical team distributed sanitary napkins to the girls, and gave them instructions on how to cope with the pain and stress that comes with the menstrual period, and also on how to dispose the waste produced.

Annual Sports Week celebrations at Mission Education centres in Kolkata

The annual sports week was celebrated in all the Mission Education centres of Kolkata. Various kinds of sporting activities were conducted for a week, which was a way to encourage the children to play outdoors rather than spending time watching television etc. Group games also encourage the children to work in harmony. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various games and cultural performances made the day a memorable one for the children as well as the parents.

New Smile on Wheels launched in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh

A new Smile on Wheels mobile hospital project was launched in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh. The project will take healthcare services to the doorsteps of families living in 12 villages of the district. The community mainly consists of agricultural labourers who belong to the lowest socio-economic strata. Powered with a team of qualified doctor, nurse, lab technician, pharmacist, driver and a group of volunteers, the project aims to benefit over 16,000 children and families directly every year.

Industry Exposure visits for STeP trainees in multiple locations

A total of 43 industry exposure visits were held for youth trainees under the Smile Twin E- learning Programme (STeP). The aim was to provide an exposure to the students with learning opportunities on latest trends and practices at prospective workplaces. The STeP programme creates a pool of young and independent people from a section of underprivileged youth, through market-oriented skill enhancement. It is an effort to bridge the huge gap between demand and supply of skilled manpower in the country.

Children from Mission Education centre in Bhaktharahalli village, Karnataka, took part in the Annual Science Exhibition held at the reputed Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru. The children were fascinated to watch as a student demonstrated a device he developed which could operate a computer by tracking eye movements & hand gestures. Talks on optic fibres, DNA, unmanned aerial vehicles and functioning drones were among the most thrilling experiences for the children.

SIFFCY@Schools – Celebration of Good Cinema for children in Chandigarh

In an effort to reach every child with meaningful cinema, Smile International Film festival for Children and Youth (SIFFCY) is now a travelling festival that has reached Chandigarh! Thousands of children from 30 schools participated in the festival that was held at St. Stephen's School. SIFFCY@Schools is a part of Smile Foundation's bigger initiative to sensitize children and youth through hand-picked quality films from across the globe on vital societal and world issues.

Sharing of blessings – privileged children unite with the underprivileged

A sensitization programme for children of St. Xaviers Cambridge School, Himachal Pradesh was held under the Child for Child programme. Privileged children from the school visited a nearby slum and spent time with the children there, complete with lots of activities and fun. The children’s mothers were also present during the session to encourage their kids. The school children shared notebooks, pencils and eatables and volunteered to teach the slum children for an hour every week.

Mega Health Camp for children and women in slums of Vikaspuri, Delhi

Over 1000 women, children, and the aged received free healthcare at the Mega Health Camp in Hasthal Village, Vikaspuri. The Mega Health Camp was facilitated by a team of 10 specialists including pediatrician, gynecologist, nutritionist, ENT specialist, dentist and paramedics who provided free of cost medical diagnosis, lab tests, medicines, and counselling. The camp also focused on free breast cancer screening for women and complete eye check-up for senior citizens.
