IIT Madras partnered with Smile Foundation, under its annual festival ‘SAARANG’, to launch Nutrition for Better Literacy campaign by providing year-long nutritional support to 100 underprivileged children.
The two-month campaign against child labour was held between November 2012 and January, 2013. An inter-college Choreo Night was conducted on January 10 and the proceeds of the show were given to Smile Foundation at a ceremony held on April 9 at IIT Madras campus.
Malnutrition is one of the biggest issues faced by our society today. Around 8 million children in India are currently out of school, with many of them forced to work to earn a single meal for the day. Hence provision of nutrition meal would serve as an incentive for these children to not miss school and further result in better learning outcomes for them.
Talking about this initiative, Soham Chokshi, Head of Public Relations, Saarang 2013, said, “We thank Smile Foundation for providing us this wonderful opportunity. We look forward to associate with them in the future.”
Adding on, Smita Kalappa, National Director, Child for Child programme, stated “This campaign was a success in reaching more underprivileged children with nutritious food. Smile Foundation strongly believes that good nutrition leads to better literacy. A nutritious meal is an incentive not to miss school for these children and we all will agree that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body.”
