Smile took up the International Literacy Day campaign on September 8 with 250 children and seven partner organizations in Delhi and NOIDA. The children put up pickets at prominent intersections displaying banners, slogans and posters, attracting people’s attention and queries.
Around 22,000 children do not attend school in Gautam Budh Nagar district (NOIDA). So the children at NOIDA headed for the District Magistrate’s office after picketing and appealed to him for ensuring improved educational facilities. Though Smile reaches out to 760 children there, it is imperative for the district administration to play a bigger role.
The DM, Mr. Santosh Kumar gave prompt assurance to Smile’s children brigade that he would give a hearing every month towards problems and hurdles in ensuring children’s education. Smile’s appeal for setting up an emergency health facilities especially for the children was also considered.
Partners organization in the campaign were Adhaar, Sankalp, Nai Disha, Swashrit, Sahogita, Healthy & Care, and Anurag. The pickets were at ITO, Ashram, Karol Bagh, Dhaula Kuan, Chattarpur in Delhi and DND Flyway, Golchakkar, Atta and Sector 37, 12-22 Chowks in NOIDA.
